Lunar Eclipse – Blood Moon – 7th of September 2025

Hi all,

This evening we were treated with a Total Lunar Eclipse, visible from The Netherlands. Unfortunately, the window of opportunity was quite short. The Moon rose at 20.12 UTC +2 in The Netherlands today, while it was already fully eclipsed.

With an altitude of maximum 5.8 degrees, the total eclipse lasted till 20.53 UTC+2, but unfortunately the sky conditions were not really favourable. Quite dense clouds far away at the horizon made me miss the window to capture the Total Eclipse with the Dwarf 3.

Nevertheless, I managed to get some nice footage of this amazing event!

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth moves directly between the Sun and the Moon, blocking sunlight and casting a shadow across the Moon’s surface. This alignment can only happen during a full moon, when all three celestial bodies are perfectly in line. Depending on how deeply the Moon enters Earth’s shadow, we can witness a total eclipse, where the Moon glows a deep red, a partial eclipse, or a more subtle penumbral eclipse.
Today, this rare alignment treated us to a lunar eclipse — a reminder of how extraordinary the movements of our solar system can appear from Earth. While lunar eclipses aren’t extremely rare worldwide, the chance to experience a total eclipse from one location only comes a few times per decade, making today’s event all the more special.

Next Total Lunar Eclipse, visible in the Netherlands, will be on the 31st of December 2028.

Overall, even in these challenging conditions, the little Dwarf 3 delivered!

To endless exploration, starry nights, and a little bit of cosmic nerdiness!
