NGC 6960, also known as the Western Veil Nebula or the Witch’s Broom Nebula, is part of the larger Veil Nebula supernova remnant in the constellation Cygnus. It is the visible remains of a massive star that exploded around 8,000 years ago, scattering its outer layers across space. The nebula’s delicate, thread-like filaments are glowing clouds of ionized gas, lit by the energy of the ancient blast. NGC 6960 appears to sweep past the bright star 52 Cygni, making it a favorite target for astrophotographers. Its intricate structure and vibrant colors reveal the lasting beauty born from a cataclysmic stellar death.
