IC1848 – ‘Soul Nebula’

Hi all,

Quick capture of IC1848, Soul Nebula.

Not the best capture so far, but although the sky wasn’t totally cloud free, I wanted to capture a new object to illustrate the nerdy geek out it did in my previous post: Plotting Deep-Sky objects on a Dwarf 3 grid.

The Soul Nebula (IC 1848), often paired with the nearby Heart Nebula, lies about 7,500 light-years away in the constellation Cassiopeia. This glowing emission nebula shines red from energized hydrogen gas illuminated by hot, young stars. At its center lies a star cluster whose stellar winds and radiation sculpt the surrounding gas and dust into dramatic shapes. Spanning nearly 100 light-years across, it is an active nursery where new stars are continually being born. Together with its “heart,” the Soul forms one of the most iconic deep-sky duos in our galaxy.

Started the session when it was not entirely dark yet, and had to cancel it when clouds started to roll in.

To endless exploration, starry nights, and a little bit of cosmic nerdiness!
